Secretary of Energy Steven Chu told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow that he is not in favor of continued offshore drilling until we develop safety procedures to prevent the kind of disaster occurring in the Gulf of Mexico. Chu made these remarks despite the fact that drilling permits are continuing to be granted, according to a New York Times report.
“Personally I think we should stop all new drilling,” Chu said.
When asked by Maddow if the government could do better by pushing BP aside, Chu said, “It’s not clear” that the government could do any better than BP.
Here are a couple of suggestions for Obama and the rest of his Administration: (1) Get more directly involved by seeking out oil experts (outside of BP), scientists, and deep sea experts like Bob Ballard’s organization; (2) Appeal to other nations and regions of the world and ask for help: the Scandinavians, for instance, have equipment for this very thing.
